Granada seismic swarm causes damage and evacuations in Andalusia

A continuous seismic swarm has affected the Granada region in Andalusia, Spain, since mid-August 2026. The activity includes hundreds of earthquakes, with the most significant being a magnitude 5.0 tremor near Alhendín on August 15 and subsequent events reaching magnitudes of 4.8.

The seismic activity has caused material damage, including cracks and falling masonry in various buildings. Technical inspections of 580 properties revealed that 14 require urgent safety measures. In Las Gabias, approximately 600 residents were evacuated from apartment blocks due to identified damage. Notable sites, including the Alhambra complex and the Granada Cathedral, have implemented temporary closures or restrictions as precautionary measures.

The Junta de Andalucía has activated the pre-emergency phase of its Seismic Risk Response Plan. Emergency services continue to monitor the situation, which includes managing over 6,700 insurance claims related to the tremors. Local authorities have also established advanced command posts to coordinate repairs and mitigate risks from falling architectural elements like cornices and chimneys.
