Granada experiences over 1,200 tremors in ongoing seismic swarm

The Granada metropolitan area in Spain has experienced a significant seismic swarm, with the National Geographic Institute (IGN) recording 1,279 tremors since August 14. The current series of activity began following a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Alhendín on August 15, which caused property damage and prompted the activation of the first operational phase of the Seismic Risk Plan.

On Saturday, August 29, several tremors were recorded in the provinces of Granada and Jaén. In Jaén, two earthquakes occurred in the early morning hours near Huelma and Torres, with magnitudes of 3.0 and 2.4 mbLg respectively. In Granada, a shallow 2.3 mbLg earthquake occurred at 8:57 AM with its epicenter near Churriana de la Vega, felt across various municipalities including Armilla, Maracena, and the provincial capital.

While the majority of the recorded events are of low magnitude, the swarm has included several notable tremors, including two magnitude 4.8 earthquakes on August 15 and 18. The latter resulted in three injuries. The ongoing activity continues to affect the metropolitan area and surrounding regions.
