Granada earthquake triggers hundreds of tremors in Andalusia
A series of seismic events has struck the province of Granada, Spain, centered near Alhendín. The primary earthquake, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 15, was recorded by the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) with a magnitude of 4.8. This event is noted as the most significant seismic activity in the Andalusia region since 1955.
Following the main tremor, hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded, with the total number of seismic events in the area exceeding 340 since August 14. While the majority of these tremors are of low magnitude, they have been felt by residents across central and eastern Andalusia, as well as in parts of Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, and the Community of Madrid.
Authorities, including Granada Mayor Marifrán Carazo, have reported no personal injuries or widespread serious structural damage. However, some non-structural damage and falling debris have been noted in the epicentral zone. Emergency services responded to hundreds of calls, and technical inspections of approximately 1,000 properties are being conducted to ensure building safety. The Junta de Andalucía has maintained a state of pre-emergency, and experts warn that further tremors of magnitude 3 or 4 may continue to occur.
