Granada implements earthquake response plan amid building evacuations

Following a series of seismic events in Granada that began in mid-August, local authorities are implementing a comprehensive response plan. The City Council, in collaboration with the Social Council, is focusing on education, prevention, and coordination to improve citizen preparedness for future earthquakes.

The impact of the seismic activity remains significant. As of September 11, 21 buildings in the Zaidín area have been classified as “red” due to serious non-structural damage. This has resulted in the evacuation of 85 homes, with 24 people currently residing in emergency shelters. While the Junta de Andalucía has approved a 46 million euro aid plan, local officials have expressed frustration regarding the lack of immediate assistance from the Spanish central government.

Political tensions have emerged regarding the management of displaced residents. The Socialist Municipal Group has criticized the city council for failing to provide official evacuation certificates to families, which are necessary for managing rental contracts and accessing aid. They have called for a long-term housing plan, arguing that emergency shelters are insufficient for families who may remain displaced for months.
