Granada ammunition factory explosion injures workers

A powerful explosion occurred at the Fábrica de Municiones de Granada (FMG) in the El Fargue district of Granada, Spain, on Friday morning. The blast, which took place around 9:00 a.m. local time, originated in the factory’s demilitarization zone, an area used for the disposal of old, damaged, or unusable ammunition.

At least three workers sustained minor injuries, primarily hearing damage, and were treated at the Hospital Virgen de las Nieves. Emergency services, including firefighters, the Civil Guard, National Police, and bomb disposal specialists (Tedax), were deployed to the scene. A large plume of smoke was visible from various parts of the city, and the shockwave was felt in nearby municipalities such as Fuente Vaqueros and La Zubia.

The factory is owned by the Czechoslovak Group (CSG) through the MSM Group. CSG stated that the incident occurred in a secure area at a safe distance from production facilities and civilian property, and they do not expect long-term impacts on operations. The trade union UGT suggested the explosion may have occurred during a routine quality test of a projectile. Authorities are currently conducting a technical investigation to determine the exact cause.
