Granada Munitions Factory incidents

Overview

In mid-October 2026, a transport vehicle from the Granada Munitions Factory spilled mortar grenades and explosives on the A-4002 highway near the El Fargue neighborhood. The spill, suspected to be caused by improper cargo securing during an internal transport, led to a temporary road closure and the activation of emergency protocols. No injuries were reported during this incident.

On October 29, 2026, a powerful explosion occurred within the facility’s powder burning area (quemadero) in the El Fargue district. The blast sent a large plume of smoke over the city and was felt in surrounding municipalities, including Víznar, Alfacar, La Zubia, and Fuente Vaqueros. Emergency services, including the Guardia Civil and specialized bomb disposal units (Tedax), responded to over 30 emergency calls.

While no serious injuries occurred, authorities and the UGT union reported that between two and five workers sustained minor injuries, primarily hearing damage. The injured were treated on-site and transported to the Hospital Universitario Virgen de las Nieves. The factory is owned by the Czechoslovak Group (CSG) through the Slovakian holding company MSM Group. The company stated the explosion took place in a demilitarization zone designed for disposing of old or damaged ammunition, and no structural damage to nearby civilian properties has been reported. Preliminary investigations suggest the incident may have occurred during a routine quality test of a projectile, though official causes are still being determined by forensic and judicial police.
