Granada Munitions Factory truck spills mortar grenades on road
A truck transporting mortar grenades and other explosives spilled part of its cargo on the A-4002 highway near the El Fargue neighborhood in Granada, Spain, on Tuesday, October 13. The incident occurred near the Granada Munitions Factory (FMG) around 2:00 PM.
The spill forced a complete road closure and the activation of a pre-emergency phase under the Junta de Andalucía’s emergency plan for dangerous goods. Emergency responders, including the Guardia Civil (TEDAX), National Police, local police, firefighters, and the Andalusia Emergency Group (GREA), secured the perimeter. No injuries were reported.
Traffic was restored later that afternoon after the material was recovered. Local police suspect the cause was improper cargo securing, which led to an internal shift that damaged the side of the truck. The Granada Munitions Factory confirmed the vehicle was performing an internal transport between two of its own facilities rather than a long-distance or export shipment. The company has launched an internal investigation to determine if the cause was a failure in the fastening systems or inadequate stowage.
