Granada advances bid for European Capital of Culture 2031

The city of Granada is preparing for the final assessment of its candidature to become the European Capital of Culture in 2031, with the decisive evaluation scheduled for 30 November. The competition includes Oviedo, Cáceres and Las Palmas, and Granada’s bid highlights its large Erasmus community and a strategic alliance with the Spanish enclaves Ceuta and Melilla.

The Confederación de Empresarios de Andalucía (CEA) endorsed the candidature unanimously on 17 July, with President Javier González de Lara stating that the title would stimulate economic and social development, attract private and EU investment, boost tourism, and generate jobs in hospitality, cultural industries and construction. Support from the local business network underscores the project’s expected impact on the regional economy and international visibility of the city.

If elected, Granada aims to leverage its heritage sites such as the Alhambra and the Albaicín, as well as its vibrant cultural festivals, to become a leading cultural hub in southern Europe and to channel European funding into local infrastructure and creative sectors.
