Grand Canyon water supply restoration expected in weeks

National Park Service officials expect to restore a reliable water supply to the Grand Canyon within weeks following a deadly flash flood on August 29. The flood resulted in two deaths, one missing person, and approximately 80 rescues.

Officials stated that the flood did not damage most of a near-complete $200 million upgrade to the 12.5-mile-long Transcanyon Waterline. This project is intended to secure the water supply for the South Rim and approximately 1,600 Grand Canyon Village residents for at least the next 50 years. Construction of a temporary water intake designed to match pre-flood pumping capacity is scheduled to begin this week.

While repairs continue, residents and tourists are being urged to practice significant water conservation to protect limited stored supplies. This incident marks the third time since August 2024 that pipeline failures have necessitated the pausing of overnight stays in the area.
