Grand Canyon flash flood disaster

Overview

On August 29, 2026, severe flash flooding struck the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas of Grand Canyon National Park. The monsoon-driven event resulted in the deaths of two hikers and left one person missing. Emergency responders evacuated approximately 82 people, many via helicopter.

The flooding caused significant infrastructure damage, including the destruction of nearly all footbridges across Bright Angel Creek and damage to the Transcanyon Waterline. This damage necessitated Stage 4 water restrictions on the South Rim and the closure of all overnight guest accommodations operated by park concessionaires.

National Park Service officials expect to restore a reliable water supply within weeks. While the flood damaged the waterline, it did not affect most of a nearly complete $200 million upgrade to the 12.5-mile pipeline. Construction of a temporary water intake is scheduled to begin to match pre-flood pumping capacity. This incident follows previous pipeline failures in the area since August 2024.
