Grand Magal of Touba 2026 sees 12 road deaths and massive security deployment
On the eve of the Grand Magal of Touba 2026, Senegal's Brigade nationale des sapeurs‑pompiers (BNSP) reported 12 fatalities and 304 victims from road accidents on the main routes to the holy city. The brigade carried out 182 interventions, treating 274 injured road users and distributing 281 m³ of water to the population.
Security forces were mobilised on an unprecedented scale. The BNSP deployed 563 firefighters with 91 vehicles, including fire trucks, ambulances and water‑tankers. The national police fielded 4,823 officers, 212 vehicles, 37 motorcycles, nine drones and an anti‑drone system, and recorded 289 arrests for various infractions. The gendarmerie contributed more than 3,000 personnel, over 200 vehicles and aerial surveillance drones. Police and gendarmerie commanders inspected the deployment ahead of the pilgrimage.
The Ministry of Family, Action Social and Solidarity (MIFASS) also sent food aid and logistical support. Authorities urged pilgrims and all road users to respect traffic rules, wear seat belts and helmets, and avoid overloading vehicles, especially given winter road conditions.
