Grand Magal de Touba security and safety updates

Entities: Touba · University Cheikh Ahmadoul Khadim of Touba · Senegal · Baye Fall · Brigade nationale des sapeurs-pompiers

Overview

A joint study released on 29 July 2026 estimated that the Grand Magal de Touba generated about 630 billion CFA francs for Senegal’s economy—roughly 2.5 times the 2017 figure. Researchers linked the surge to heightened demand for food, transport and financial services during the pilgrimage and suggested that the event could be leveraged to spur industrialisation in Touba, including local leather‑tanning and agrobusiness projects that might create tens of thousands of jobs.

Two days later, as the 132nd Magal unfolded, a serious traffic collision near Mbacké killed three pilgrims and injured fifteen others. In response, Senegal’s gendarmerie deployed more than 3,000 personnel, over 200 vehicles and three surveillance drones to secure the city and the main road and rail corridors used by the millions of faithful. The security operation, overseen by General Martin Faye and coordinated with the Mouride religious leadership, aimed to protect pilgrims and keep traffic flowing on key routes such as the A2 highway and national roads RN1‑RN4.

On the eve of the pilgrimage, authorities reported a surge in road accidents, with 68 incidents resulting in seven deaths and dozens of injuries. The national fire brigade mobilised 563 firefighters and 91 intervention vehicles—including fire trucks, ambulances, medical ambulances, road‑rescue units and motorcycles—along with water‑tankers and flood‑control equipment to address rainy‑season risks. The gendarmerie’s deployment rose to 3,073 gendarmes, and police made 289 arrests for various infractions. A 28‑person Baye Fall monitoring cell was also created to track social‑media content deemed disrespectful to the Magal.
