Graz sports clubs protest Holding Graz sponsorship termination
Professional sports clubs in Graz—SK Sturm Graz, GAK 1902, and the Graz99ers ice hockey team—have issued a joint statement following the announcement that Holding Graz will cease all sponsorships by the end of the 2026/27 season. The decision is part of a budget consolidation measure ordered by the city of Graz.
The clubs argue that the financial relationship is not a subsidy but a highly effective marketing investment. According to figures released by the clubs, the three organizations collectively pay approximately €2.8 million annually to the city in municipal taxes, stadium and arena rents, and energy costs. They estimate the advertising value provided to Holding Graz at €5.3 million, significantly outweighing the €905,000 in sponsorship and funding received from the holding company.
SK Sturm Graz President Christian Jauk criticized the decision, stating that the city government underestimates the clubs' impact as ambassadors for Graz. He highlighted the clubs' contributions to the local economy, including the support of 500 jobs, youth development, and social integration efforts.
