Styrian sports funding and sponsorship reductions
Overview
Elite sports in Styria, Austria, are facing significant financial challenges due to a combination of reduced government support and the termination of corporate sponsorships.
Starting in 2027, Holding Graz will end its sponsorship agreements with three professional clubs in Graz: SK Sturm, GAK, and the 99ers. The clubs issued a joint statement arguing that the relationship is a marketing investment rather than a subsidy. They claim the advertising value they provide to Holding Graz is approximately €5.3 million, which significantly outweighs the €905,000 in sponsorship and funding received. SK Sturm President Christian Jauk noted that the city government underestimates the clubs’ roles as ambassadors and their economic contributions, including supporting 500 jobs.
Simultaneously, the proposed 2027 Styrian state budget includes a roughly ten percent reduction in sports funding, dropping from approximately 11.47 million euros to 10.34 million euros. Top-tier team sports are expected to face a sharper decline of 16.2 percent. Political leaders have criticized these savings plans, while sports officials have warned that the financial limits for organized sports may have been reached.
