Great Barrier Reef shows signs of coral recovery in northern and central regions

New data from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) indicates a partial recovery of hard coral cover in parts of the Great Barrier Reef following severe bleaching events in 2024.

Between August 2025 and June 2026, a survey of 121 reefs showed that coral cover increased in the northern and central regions. In the north, hard coral cover rose from 30% in 2025 to 35.1% in 2026, while the central area saw an increase from 28.6% to 31.6%. Conversely, the southern region experienced a slight decline from 26.9% to 26.4%.

Overall, coral cover increased in 28% of the surveyed reefs, remained stable in 56%, and decreased in 16%. Researchers suggest that a late monsoon may have played a critical role by cooling the sea temperatures, helping to mitigate the impact of rising ocean heat.
