Great Barrier Reef coral recovery status

Overview

Data from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) indicates a partial recovery of hard coral cover in parts of the Great Barrier Reef following severe bleaching events in 2024. Between August 2025 and June 2026, surveys of 121 reefs showed that coral cover increased in the northern and central regions. Specifically, northern cover rose from 30% to 35.1%, and central cover increased from 28.6% to 31.6%. The southern region saw a slight decline from 26.9% to 26.4%.

Overall, coral cover increased in 28% of surveyed reefs, remained stable in 56%, and decreased in 16%. Researchers suggest a late-season summer monsoon provided critical relief by cooling water temperatures through increased rainfall and cloud cover. While these findings offer “encouraging signs of recovery,” scientists warn that the ecosystem remains under significant pressure from warming oceans, having endured six mass bleaching events since 2016.

Great Barrier Reef shows signs of recovery after monsoon cooling

A late summer monsoon has aided the recovery of the Great Barrier Reef by cooling waters, leading to increased coral cover in its northern and central regions despite ongoing climate pressures.
