Great Pacific Garbage Patch fosters new marine ecosystem on floating plastic
Scientists investigating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—an estimated 80,000‑metric‑ton mass of floating debris between California and Hawaii—found that the plastic islands host a thriving community of marine life. Analysis of 105 pieces of debris revealed 46 different species, including crabs, barnacles, anemones and amphipods, with coastal species making up about 80 % of the recorded fauna. Invertebrates were present on 98 % of the items, and both juveniles and fully grown adults were observed, indicating that the organisms are reproducing and completing life cycles on the plastic.
The researchers described the assemblage as a "neopelagic" or "plastisphere" community, where human‑made debris provides permanent habitats for species that would normally inhabit shorelines. This novel ecosystem demonstrates how plastic pollution is reshaping oceanic food webs and could have broader implications for marine biodiversity and ecosystem processes.
