Polyethylene accounted for 97 % of the polymers, with higher concentrations and a broader polymer spectrum in heart‑attack patients. Smokers and individuals exposed to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were markedly more likely to carry particles, and higher loads correlated with elevated inflammatory cytokines (TNF‑α, IL‑6). A follow‑up analysis confirmed these figures and reiterated the need for larger, multicenter studies to determine whether environmental plastics constitute an emerging cardiovascular risk factor alongside traditional ones. A separate Vietnamese cohort reported the same 84 % detection rate in heart‑attack patients, with polyethylene (58.4 %) and PVC (12.1 %) as the main polymers. Patients with arterial microplastics faced a 4.5‑fold higher risk of myocardial infarction, stroke or cardiovascular death. The authors again highlighted associations with smoking and air‑pollution exposure and called for public measures to limit plastic contact. New research deepens the cardiovascular focus. An Italian study linking micro‑ and nanoplastics in placenta, breast milk, sperm and blood to a 4.5‑fold increase in heart attack, stroke and obesity risk has intensified calls to activate the stalled SalvaMare law, which would improve collection of fishing‑gear‑caught plastic waste.
