Overview
Research through mid‑2026 continues to map extensive microplastic contamination in water, soil, food and air, and its possible health impacts. Laboratory work shows street dust and household items release nanoplastics, while debris in marine gyres may boost atmospheric heating. Human studies across Europe have reported short‑term immune changes, allergic airway inflammation in mice, and detection of plastic particles in several organs. An Italian investigation of 61 angiography patients, published in the European Heart Journal, found micro‑ and nanoplastics in the coronary blood of 84 % of acute myocardial‑infarction (STEMI) cases, versus 40 % of chronic‑ischemia patients and 32 % of controls. Polyethylene accounted for 97 % of the polymers, with higher concentrations and a broader polymer spectrum in heart‑attack patients. Smokers and individuals exposed to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were markedly more likely to carry particles, and higher loads correlated with elevated inflammatory cytokines (TNF‑α, IL‑6). A follow‑up analysis confirmed these figures and reiterated the need for larger, multicenter studies to determine whether environmental plastics constitute an emerging cardiovascular risk factor alongside traditional ones. A separate Vietnamese cohort reported the same 84 % detection rate in heart‑attack patients, with polyethylene (58.4 %) and PVC (12.1 %) as the main polymers. Patients with arterial microplastics faced a 4.5‑fold higher risk of myocardial infarction, stroke or cardiovascular death. The authors again highlighted associations with smoking and air‑pollution exposure and called for public measures to limit plastic contact. New research deepens the cardiovascular focus. An Italian study linking micro‑ and nanoplastics in placenta, breast milk, sperm and blood to a 4.5‑fold increase in heart attack, stroke and obesity risk has intensified calls to activate the stalled SalvaMare law, which would improve collection of fishing‑gear‑caught plastic waste.
