Great Wall Motors unveils new diesel engine, EV pop‑up in Australia

Great Wall Motors (GWM) announced that its all‑new 3.0‑litre turbo‑diesel will debut in Australia this September, powering the Tank 500 seven‑seat SUV and the Cannon Alpha utility vehicle. The engine delivers 170 kW (231 PS) and 620 Nm of torque, a 35 kW and 140 Nm increase over the current 2.4‑litre unit, and is paired with a nine‑speed automatic transmission. GWM says the powertrain offers a braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg and fuel consumption of about 7.1–7.3 L/100 km. Development and validation were carried out locally, with Rob Trubiani leading the engineering work.

In a separate marketing activation, GWM Australia transformed a disused service station in Collingwood, Melbourne, into an “ORA Fun Station” pop‑up on 2 August. The event showcased the Vehicle‑to‑Load (V2L) capability of the ORA 5 electric SUV, which supplied all electricity for coffee machines, food trucks, lighting and sound. Steve Maciver, head of marketing and communications, said the activation demonstrates how EVs can power everyday experiences beyond transportation.
