Greater Accra Minister Ocloo orders demolition of illegal buildings on waterways
Ghana's Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo announced that structures identified as obstructing drains and waterways will be demolished. Owners will be given up to three days to clear their belongings before demolition begins, as part of the two‑day National General Cleaning Exercise launched on 10 July to curb flooding and improve sanitation in the capital region.
Ocloo also warned that any Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive who approved construction on waterways will be dismissed, echoing President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to hold local officials accountable for illegal developments that exacerbate flood risk. Some occupants of marked buildings claim they possess permits, prompting investigations. The demolition effort follows the severe June 29 floods that caused deaths, displacement and extensive property damage across Greater Accra.
