Greater Chennai Corporation intensifies mosquito control and fever surveillance

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has intensified mosquito control and vector prevention measures following reports of disease and a recent death. Between September 14 and 19, officials inspected over 1.1 million houses, identifying and removing mosquito breeding sources in 4,192 locations.

In response to the death of a 20-year-old Anna University student from scrub typhus, civic officials deployed nearly 100 workers to the campus for cleanliness and vector control. While officials clarified that scrub typhus is not mosquito-borne and there is no current outbreak, they noted that 173 cases of the disease have been reported in the city this year.

To combat dengue, the GCC has deployed 3,697 field workers to visit 80–100 houses daily. The corporation is utilizing Abate larvicide in water tanks, MLO oil in drains, and conducting fogging operations in residential and commercial areas. Additionally, the GCC has ensured medicine stocks are available at hundreds of urban health centres and is monitoring fever patients discharged from hospitals.
