Greater Chennai Corporation launches women's safety programme

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched the ‘Safe Chennai for Women’ programme to improve safety in public spaces and on public transport. Organized by the Corporation’s Gender and Policy Lab at Victoria Public Hall as part of Madras Day celebrations, the initiative encourages young citizens to take an active role in fostering inclusive and secure environments.

The programme included student-led discussions and a play focused on civic and bystander responsibility. During the event, students took a ‘Safe Chennai’ pledge, committing to values of respect, equality, and responsible civic participation. Corporation Commissioner GS Sameeran stated that the Gender and Policy Lab will play a key role in integrating gender considerations into the city's urban planning.
