Greater Chennai Corporation gender and safety initiatives

Overview

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated several programs focused on gender equality and urban safety. The efforts began with a capacity-building training program for teachers across 211 corporation schools. This training aims to coordinate ‘Gender Clubs’ and covers topics such as gender-sensitive teaching, child rights, bullying prevention, and adolescent mental health to foster inclusive learning environments.

Following this, the GCC launched the ‘Safe Chennai for Women’ programme during Madras Day celebrations. Organized by the Corporation’s Gender and Policy Lab, the initiative focuses on improving safety in public spaces and on public transport. The program involves student-led discussions and pledges to promote civic responsibility. Commissioner GS Sameeran indicated that the Gender and Policy Lab will work to integrate gender considerations into the city’s urban planning processes.
