Nine passengers, including a woman, were killed after a double-decker sleeper bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway near Jewar in Greater Noida late Wednesday night. The bus, operated by Raj Kalpana Travels, was traveling from Delhi to Mahoba with approximately 30 to 35 passengers on board.

Many passengers were asleep when the fire broke out. As smoke filled the cabin, several people attempted to escape by jumping through windows or leaping from the moving vehicle. Emergency responders and fire services evacuated roughly 20 to 25 people, but nine individuals were trapped and died from fire or suffocation.

An FIR filed by passenger Sunil Kumar alleges that the driver and conductor ignored reports of a burning smell and continued smoking in the cabin. The driver reportedly refused to stop the bus immediately, even as passengers pleaded for help. Police have arrested the driver and conductor in connection with the incident.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have originated from a malfunction or explosion in the bus's air conditioning system. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences. The Chief Minister announced financial aid of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
