Fatal accidents on Yamuna Expressway

Overview

A series of fatal transportation incidents occurred on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

On August 30, a high-speed truck traveling from Noida toward Agra lost control, crossed the expressway divider, and collided head-on with a car, resulting in four deaths.

On September 24, a massive fire broke out on a private double-decker sleeper bus operated by Raj Kalpana Travels. The bus was traveling from Delhi toward Mahoba when the blaze erupted near the 33-kilometer milestone in the Jewar police station jurisdiction. Approximately 30 to 50 people were on board at the time. As the fire spread rapidly, many passengers were forced to jump from windows to escape thick, toxic smoke. Nine passengers, including a woman, died from burning and suffocation, while approximately 20 to 25 people were rescued safely and others sustained injuries.

Preliminary investigations have shifted toward a potential spark or blast in the bus’s air conditioning system, which may have ignited the engine’s lubricating oil. Some passengers alleged that they had reported a burning smell to the driver and conductor prior to the incident, but their concerns were dismissed. There are also allegations that the crew continued smoking in the cabin despite the smell. A passenger, Sunil Kumar, filed an FIR regarding these allegations. Authorities have taken the driver and conductor into custody as investigations continue.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences and announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for each victim’s family and ₹50,000 for those injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced ex-gratia payments of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the PMNRF.
