Greece addresses energy regulation and desertification risks

During the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair, Greek authorities addressed critical environmental and resource management challenges. The Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (RRAEEW) highlighted the strategic importance of integrating energy, waste, and water management under a single independent authority to ensure system resilience and consumer protection. RRAEEW President Konstantinos Tsimaras noted that renewable energy sources covered 46.7% of domestic demand in 2025, with ongoing developments in energy storage and offshore wind farms.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Rural Development and Food focused on the threat of desertification. Argyros Zerba, General Secretary of EU Funds and Infrastructure, warned that Greece is among the seven European countries most threatened by soil degradation, with significant portions of agricultural land already facing high or very high levels of degradation. The Ministry is working on a National Action Plan to combat this through an integrated approach involving water management, drought mitigation, and biodiversity protection, supported by the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) framework for the 2028–2034 period.
