Land degradation and desertification in Greece

Overview

A report from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) indicates that desertification affects 36% of Greece’s territory, with approximately 73% of the country experiencing some form of land degradation. This degradation, driven by climatic variations and human activities, results in lost soil productivity. To address this, the JRC has proposed a new methodology to classify degraded land using indicators such as soil health and changes in land cover.

In response to these environmental threats, the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food is developing a National Action Plan. This plan aims to combat soil degradation through integrated water management, drought mitigation, and biodiversity protection, utilizing the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) framework for the 2028–2034 period. Officials have noted that Greece is among the seven European nations most threatened by such degradation.
