Greece advances Patriot upgrade with new PAC‑3 ACE missiles

The Hellenic Air Force operates one of Europe’s most reliable Patriot missile batteries, which has been deployed for almost four years in Saudi Arabia to protect critical energy infrastructure. During this mission the system achieved its first real‑world operational readiness abroad, successfully intercepting ballistic missiles in March, destroying an unmanned aerial vehicle in early April, and engaging additional missile and UAV threats later, proving the capability of both the system and Greek crews.

These experiences highlighted the importance of maintaining a large stock of interceptors in prolonged conflicts. Consequently, Greece is focusing on upgrading its Patriot suite with the new PAC‑3 ACE (Adapted Capability Effector) warhead. Contacts with the manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, have already been made to launch the programme. The ACE missile promises higher performance, lower cost compared with the current PAC‑3 MSE, and full compatibility with upgraded Patriot batteries and the Integrated Air and Missile Defence Battle Management System (IBCS).
