Greece missile acquisition and upgrade

Entities: Hellenic Air Force · Lockheed Martin · PAC‑3 ACE · Patriot missile system

Overview

In early July 2026, Greece opened talks with Lockheed Martin to procure the U.S. Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), a tactical ballistic missile with a range exceeding 500 km. The negotiations, following a meeting at the Eurosatory exhibition, aim to secure a formal request to Washington and would complement Greece’s recent purchase of Israeli PULS rocket‑artillery systems. Plans also include modernising a portion of the existing M270 launchers for PrSM compatibility and potentially acquiring new HIMARS FLEX launchers, with older M270 units slated for sale to fund the programme. The goal is to have the capability operational before 2030.

Later in July, Greek officials highlighted an upgrade to their Patriot air‑defence batteries, prompted by real‑world operational experience in Saudi Arabia where Greek crews intercepted ballistic missiles and UAVs. Greece is moving to integrate the new PAC‑3 ACE warhead, which promises higher performance and lower cost, and will be compatible with the upgraded Patriot system and the Integrated Air and Missile Defence Battle Management System (IBCS). Contacts with Lockheed Martin have already been made to start the upgrade programme.
