Greece advances subsea cable project amid regional diplomacy
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has affirmed that the Great Sea Interconnector project will proceed without compromising Greece's sovereign rights. In a radio interview, Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of the electrical interconnection between Greece and Cyprus.
In a related development regarding regional stability, the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet reported that Greece's decision to transfer oversight of subsea cables and critical underwater infrastructure from the Navy to the Coast Guard could be interpreted as a goodwill measure. This move is seen as a potential way to prevent confrontations between Turkish and Greek naval vessels, similar to past incidents involving cable projects.
Furthermore, representatives from Greece and Turkey met in Chania on October 9, 2026, to discuss Confidence Building Measures (CBMs). The meeting, hosted by the Greek Ministry of National Defense, involved ambassadors and high-ranking military officials. The discussions focused on implementing agreed-upon measures for 2026 and planning activities for 2027, concluding in a positive atmosphere.
