Greece AI traffic cameras issue erroneous fines

In Greece, the implementation of new AI-powered traffic cameras has led to several controversial and erroneous fines. These advanced monitoring systems are designed to enforce 30 km/h speed limits in residential areas and detect violations such as seatbelt non-compliance and mobile phone usage.

Reports indicate that the artificial intelligence has made significant errors in judgment. In one instance, a driver was fined 350 euros and had their license suspended for 30 days after the AI misinterpreted the act of scratching an ear as using a mobile phone. In another case, the system incorrectly flagged a driver for a passenger not wearing a seatbelt when the object in the seat was actually luggage. Additionally, a female driver was wrongly cited for not wearing a seatbelt because the black belt blended into her black clothing, causing the AI to fail to recognize it.
