Greece provides €1.1 bn to farmers and earmarks €80 m for irrigation projects

The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food announced that €1.1 billion has already been paid to Greek farmers under the reformed Common Agricultural Policy, with a comparable amount expected by the end of the year. The reform, supported by the European Commission, aims to create a more transparent and efficient payments system.

The government also resolved a long‑standing issue on public lands, giving beneficiaries the right to formalise ownership of the land they have cultivated for decades. Additionally, €80 million has been allocated for small‑scale irrigation projects nationwide, financed from resources released by the organic livestock and beekeeping programmes and to be managed by municipalities. Fertiliser assistance totals €61 million, comprising €21 million from EU funds and the remainder from national sources.

These measures are intended to strengthen agricultural infrastructure, improve water use efficiency, and support the primary sector amid geopolitical and climate challenges.
