Greece and France coordinate resumption of Mediterranean energy cable surveys

Greece and France are preparing a joint communiqué to notify coastal states, including Turkey, regarding the resumption of survey works for the Greece–Cyprus–Israel electrical interconnection cable project.

The project, known as the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), is entering a new phase following the entry of the French investment firm Meridiam as a majority shareholder. The upcoming operations will involve a French-flagged research vessel conducting cable laying surveys in undefined maritime areas. The communiqué will specify the vessel's name, the exact locations of the surveys, and the expected duration of the work.

While Turkey will be informed, no permission will be sought from Ankara to conduct these surveys. Following the announcement, Greece and Cyprus plan to issue simultaneous NAVTEX notices to inform mariners. The Greek Navy's Hydrographic Service in Heraklion will handle maritime notices for the Eastern Mediterranean region. The resumption of these works is viewed as a significant geopolitical and energy development in the Eastern Mediterranean.
