Porto Germano wildfire in Greece forces evacuations and destroys over 100 homes FAST-MOVING

A forest fire ignited near the village of Agios Vasileios close to the coastal resort of Porto Germeno on 31 July 2026. Strong winds of up to 130 km/h created three separate fire fronts, hampered aerial water drops and made ground operations extremely difficult.

More than 300 firefighters were deployed, supported by units from France and Romania, and about 30 aircraft were sent to the scene, many of which could not operate because of the wind. Roughly 300 residents were evacuated by sea. The blaze has damaged or destroyed between 100 and 150 houses and has caused extensive loss of forest and olive‑grove area. Three firefighters lost their lives. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned that the country faces “tough days” as the fire continues to spread.

The situation remains critical, with authorities maintaining high‑alert status for the wider Attica region and neighboring islands, and issuing further evacuation orders for several villages.
