Greece and Malta co‑host UN forum on maritime terrorism and security

During the United Nations Counter‑Terrorism Week 2026, an event titled “Terrorism and Maritime Insecurity: Collective Efforts to Counter Terrorism in the Maritime Domain” was held at UN headquarters. The forum was jointly organised by the permanent missions of Malta and Greece, the UN Counter‑Terrorism Office, the International Maritime Organization and other UN bodies. Greek Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Aglaia Bald, underscored that maritime security is now a core component of global security architecture and warned that terrorist groups and transnational criminal networks are increasingly targeting commercial shipping, ports and critical maritime infrastructure, threatening supply chains, coastal communities and the environment.

Bald called for stronger cooperation among states, international and regional organisations and the private sector, emphasizing the role of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, real‑time information sharing, cyber‑security, port‑management systems and advanced navigation tools. She highlighted that Greece, home to the world’s largest merchant fleet, views maritime security as a strategic imperative and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to contribute to safe, protected and open seas for all.
