Overview

Since late June 2026 the Shipping and Island Policy Ministry has pursued lower inter‑island fares, intensified vessel inspections and port hardening, backed by a €168 million Transport Equivalent subsidy that yields 24‑42 % discounts on fast‑ferry routes. In early July Minister Vasilis Kikilis toured Kalymnos, announced four‑year tenders for loss‑making routes, deployed the patrol boat Rafnar and created 500 new Coast Guard posts, pledging to recruit another 500 officers by year‑end. Surveillance tools—drones, satellite imaging, open‑source data and AI—support marine‑park patrols, subsea‑cable protection and harbour monitoring.

Subsequent visits to Piraeus, Zakynthos and Patras highlighted dredging works, a €6.5 million floating ambulance boat and an AI‑equipped operations centre. The Patras Master Plan unveiled a 212‑berth mega‑yacht marina, while Kyllini port inspections confirmed ongoing safety oversight across ten daily ferry routes handling over 810 000 passengers in 2025.

On 28 July Minister Kikilis confirmed that ferry ticket prices remained unchanged for a second year despite the war‑driven energy crisis. Competition among operators kept discounts at 25‑42 % and, on some routes, as high as 50 %, with fares on routes such as Rafina dropping to as low as one euro per car. Over 1,800 emergency safety inspections have been performed, and a further 500 marine‑guard personnel are being recruited through ASEP to fill Coast Guard staffing gaps.
