Greece and Turkey face escalating Mediterranean tensions

Tensions between NATO members Greece and Turkey are escalating due to long-standing disputes over territorial waters, airspace violations, and maritime claims in the Mediterranean.

Greece has reported violations of its airspace and criticized Turkish maritime national parks as illegal, while also noting the movement of Turkish troops toward the coast. In response, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called for an end to the ‘militarization’ of Greek islands, with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan describing the situation as a security threat to Turkey.

To bolster its defense, Greece has entered a multi-million dollar arms agreement with Israel known as ‘Achilles Shield,’ which provides a comprehensive air defense system. Security experts warn that the increasing rhetoric and regional instability could push these tensions toward an extreme point.
