Greece and Turkey hold diplomatic talks in Chania amid Aegean tensions
Representatives from Greece and Turkey met in Chania, Crete, on October 9, 2026, to discuss Confidence Building Measures (CBMs). The delegations, consisting of ambassadors, senior military officers, and political officials, reviewed agreed-upon measures for 2026 and discussed implementation plans for 2027. The Turkish Ministry of National Defence described the atmosphere of the meeting as “positive” and noted that the next round of talks will be hosted by Turkey.
Despite the diplomatic discussions, the Hellenic National Defence General Staff reported new provocations in the Aegean Sea the following day. According to official data, six unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) conducted eight violations of Athens FIR Air Traffic Rules in the Northeast, Central, and Southeast Aegean, as well as five violations of Greek National Airspace. The Greek military stated that the aircraft were identified and intercepted in accordance with international rules.
