Greek-Turkish Aegean airspace violations
Overview
Tensions between Greece and Turkey escalated in August 2026 following multiple incursions into Greek-controlled airspace in the Aegean Sea.
In early August, Turkish Bayraktar Akıncı unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) entered Greek airspace, prompting diplomatic protests from Athens. This incident highlighted the growing role of Turkey’s defense industry in regional security dynamics.
On August 12, the situation intensified as Greek authorities recorded seven separate violations involving four Turkish aircraft, including one ATR-72 maritime cooperation plane and three UAVs. These incursions occurred across the Northeast, Central, and Southeast Aegean within the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR) without submitted flight plans. Greek fighter jets intercepted the aircraft, though no physical engagements were reported.
Following Ankara’s declaration of two new maritime parks in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean—a move contested by Greece—airspace activity increased significantly. On August 17, Turkey conducted 12 violations involving three UAVs and one CN-235 maritime cooperation aircraft.
On August 18, the situation escalated further with 25 violations of Greek national airspace and 14 violations of the Athens FIR. This wave involved 12 Turkish aircraft, including four UAVs, a CN-235, and armed F-16 fighter jets. While previous incidents involved unarmed aircraft, the August 18 activity included armed F-16 formations and one recorded engagement. Greek Armed Forces intercepted the aircraft according to international rules.
