Greek-Turkish Aegean airspace violations

Overview

Tensions between Greece and Turkey escalated in August 2026 following multiple incursions into Greek-controlled airspace in the Aegean Sea. In early August, Turkish Bayraktar Akıncı unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) entered Greek airspace, prompting diplomatic protests from Athens. On August 12, Greek authorities recorded seven violations involving four Turkish aircraft, including one ATR-72 maritime cooperation plane and three UAVs, occurring across the Northeast, Central, and Southeast Aegean within the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR). Following Ankara’s declaration of two new maritime parks in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean—a move contested by Greece—airspace activity increased. On August 17, Turkey conducted 12 violations involving three UAVs and one CN-235 maritime cooperation aircraft. This intensified on August 18, when 12 Turkish aircraft, including armed F-16 fighter jets, resulted in 25 violations of Greek national airspace and 14 violations of the Athens FIR. This wave included one recorded engagement. On August 26, Turkish military aircraft conducted another 13 violations of Greek national airspace over the Northeast, Central, and Southeast Aegean. These incursions involved one CN-235 maritime cooperation aircraft and five UAVs, which also committed eight violations of air traffic rules within the Athens FIR. These aircraft operated individually and were unarmed. On August 28, a Turkish drone entered Greek airspace near Alexandroupoli in northeastern Greece, flying near an airport runway during a commercial flight's takeoff preparation. Greek F-16s were scrambled to intercept the drone, forcing it to leave the airspace. While the commercial flight had to change its departure runway, authorities reported no direct repercussions for flight safety. Data from the Greek Ministry of Defense indicates a sharp rise in violations, noting 225 cases in 2025 compared to 433 cases by early August 2026. On August 31, Turkish aircraft conducted further violations in the Central and Southeastern Aegean.
