Greece announces 220 million euro livestock support plan

Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food, Margaritis Schoinas, has announced a comprehensive support package and restructuring plan for the nation's livestock sector. More than 220 million euros have been allocated since 2025 to assist producers facing rising costs and disease outbreaks.

The government's strategy focuses on three main pillars: limiting animal mortality, providing economic support to affected farmers, and preparing for future livestock recovery. A proposed restructuring plan aims to modernize farming facilities, enhance biosecurity, and improve veterinary services. Schoinas noted that the compensation provided for animal deaths in Greece is among the highest in the European Union.

Addressing the impact of African Swine Fever, particularly on the island of Lesvos, the Minister emphasized the goal of eradicating the disease rather than managing it long-term. The plan may involve the assistance of the Greek Armed Forces to utilize their personnel and infrastructure where necessary.

To mitigate rising production costs, the government has already invested 61 million euros in fertilizers and is working on measures regarding fuel and pumping costs. Additionally, an expansion of the tax-free threshold to 20,000 euros is being implemented to alleviate the financial burden on the majority of farmers.
