Greece Ministry of Education manages teacher hiring and student aid
The Greek Ministry of Education is addressing several urgent issues regarding the 2026-2027 academic year. To combat staffing shortages, the Ministry is initiating an A2 phase of teacher recruitment to fill approximately 250 vacancies left by those who did not assume their positions in the first phase. This follows an initial recruitment of 30,000 substitute teachers. Data from the Teachers' Federation indicates thousands of operational gaps remain in primary and nursery schools, particularly in special education and parallel support.
Regarding student welfare, the Ministry has reopened the electronic platform for student housing allowance applications for the 2025-2026 academic year. Eligible students who missed the initial deadline can submit applications via the official portal using TAXISnet credentials until September 22, 2026.
In a tragic development, Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki expressed deep sorrow following the death of a female student at the 1st General Lyceum in Kozani. Despite immediate CPR efforts by a trained teacher and the use of a school defibrillator, the student could not be saved. Psychologists and social workers will be deployed to the school to provide support to students and staff.
