Greece expands resettlement and remote work subsidy programs

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced several initiatives aimed at addressing demographic challenges and supporting regional economies.

A key component is the expansion of the Resettlement Program, which offers financial incentives of up to €10,000 to individuals and families who choose to move permanently to areas facing population decline. Following a pilot in Evros, the program is expanding to seven municipalities in the Ioannina regional unit and the municipalities of Souli and Filiates in Thesprotia. Additionally, an application platform for eight other regional units—Kastoria, Kilkis, Serres, Florina, Pella, Drama, Kozani, and Grevena—is expected to open in October.

To support employment in remote and mountainous areas, the government is planning a new subsidized remote work program. This initiative will cover 90% of salaries and social security contributions for 12 months for businesses that hire residents of these regions. This is intended to allow workers to remain in their home communities while working for companies located elsewhere.

Furthermore, new vocational training is being introduced in Karpenisi, specifically a 'Hotel Business' specialty through DYPA, with 25 positions planned for 2026-2027 to support mountain tourism.
