Greece allocates over 1 billion euros for student housing

Greece is allocating over 1 billion euros toward student housing to expand capacity and improve existing facilities. Deputy Minister of Education Nikos Papaioannou announced that the initiative aims to increase the number of available dormitory beds from approximately 12,000 to over 20,000.

The funding is sourced from several channels: 737.5 million euros through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) involving six universities, approximately 87 million euros from the Public Investment Program, and 227 million euros from the Social Climate Fund. These resources will support both the construction of new dormitories and the renovation of older buildings, particularly in cities like Athens and Thessaloniki.

In addition to infrastructure, the government plans to enhance security within dormitories by expanding the use of card-based entry systems. The Deputy Minister also stated that self-managed or illegally occupied spaces within student housing will be phased out to ensure that facilities are safe, functional, and accessible only to eligible students.
