Greece approves €6.5 bn housing strategy to build 20,000 homes and add 8,500 student beds

The Greek government has approved the ten‑year National Housing Strategy for 2026‑2035, allocating a budget of more than €6.5 billion. The plan outlines 50 measures grouped under three pillars: expanding the supply of housing, providing targeted support to households and vulnerable groups, and establishing permanent institutions for monitoring and planning housing policy.

Implementation actions include the construction or renovation of about 19,750 affordable homes, expected to benefit roughly 60,000 citizens, the creation of 2,350 new social housing units on public land, and the immediate allocation of 400 homes through a new social‑exchange scheme. The strategy also adds 8,500 new beds to existing student residences across six public universities and funds the building of 2,000 homes for armed‑forces personnel. Of the 50 measures, 36 are already available through the digital portal stegasi.gov.gr, while 14 are new interventions.
