Greece Introduces Permanent Hiring System for Municipal Childcare Centers

The Greek Ministry of Interior has activated a new permanent hiring framework for staff of municipal kindergartens, nurseries and infant‑care stations. The system, introduced by the Local Government Code approved in June, requires all recruitments to be carried out exclusively through the public employment service ASEP and mandates at least 24 months of relevant experience for most positions. Municipalities must create the required organic posts by 30 September 2026, with the total number of new permanent posts estimated at around 9 000 nationwide. The circular issued by Deputy Minister V. Charalambogianni provides detailed implementation instructions and urges local authorities to act promptly. The reform aims to replace recurring fixed‑term contracts with stable employment, improving service continuity for early‑childhood education.
