Greece arrests four for causing fires during extreme risk period

Four individuals have been arrested in Greece following incidents of fire caused by negligence during a period of extreme fire risk (level 5). The arrests took place in Mytilene, Patra, and Kalamos.

In Mytilene, two individuals were detained for performing hot work with a brush cutter in an agricultural area. In Patra, a 53-year-old man was arrested for lighting a fire in dry grass and waste. In Kalamos, a 31-year-old man was apprehended for using a barbecue grill near a forested area.

The Greek Fire Service reported 53 agricultural and forest fires across the country in the last 24 hours, 46 of which were contained in their initial stages. Since the beginning of the year, authorities have issued 713 administrative fines totaling over 1.1 million euros and conducted 296 arrests, the vast majority of which were due to negligence.
