Greece arrests multiple individuals for arson and fire violations
Greek authorities have conducted several arrests related to intentional arson and fire protection violations across multiple regions. In Evia, a 40-year-old man was arrested after confessing to starting three consecutive fires in a forested area near Chalkida using a lighter. The suspect reportedly acted out of resentment toward his neighbors and had a prior legal history involving similar offenses in 2018.
Additional arrests occurred in other parts of the country: a man in Paros was detained for a fire involving a vehicle that spread to nearby vegetation; a 69-year-old in Trikala was fined for burning plant waste; a 53-year-old in Rhodes was cited for a fire caused during hot work; and a 60-year-old in Chalkidiki was arrested following a fire during business operations.
According to the Fire Service, between January 1 and September 13, 2026, a total of 792 administrative fines totaling over 1.35 million euros have been issued. During this period, 352 arrests were made, with approximately 89.5% resulting from negligence and 10.5% from intentional acts.
