Greece arrests four over fires on Rhodes and Corfu islands

Wildfires broke out on Greece's popular tourist islands of Rhodes and Corfu. On Rhodes, the blaze in the Ataviros area was tackled by 25 firefighters, eight fire trucks and a helicopter, aided by volunteers and civil protection teams. On Corfu, a fire near residential, agricultural and forested land saw 24 firefighters, a pedestrian unit, volunteers and six vehicles respond, while two firefighting aircraft and a helicopter were dispatched.

Four suspects were taken into custody under "caught in the act" provisions—two for negligence and two suspected of arson. Authorities noted that since the start of the year, 513 administrative fines totalling €619,569 have been issued for forest fires, with 155 people detained, 142 for negligence and 13 for suspected arson. Officials warned that human negligence remains the leading cause of such fires and urged the public to strictly follow fire‑safety rules during the season.
