Greece arrests two for arson in East Attica and Evia

The Hellenic Fire Service has conducted several arrests and issued significant fines following recent wildfire incidents in East Attica and Evia.

In East Attica, a 39-year-old man was arrested for intentional arson after using a lighter to ignite vegetation near Lavriou Avenue. In Evia, a 42-year-old man was arrested for negligence after a fire broke out during fig tree defoliation activities in the Neos Pyrgos area. The latter was also issued an administrative fine of 3,281 euros.

Authorities report that from January 1 to August 20, 2026, a total of 733 administrative fines have been imposed, amounting to over 1.17 million euros. During this period, 308 arrests were made under summary proceedings, with 88.96% attributed to negligence and 11.04% to intentional acts. The Fire Service continues to investigate arson-related crimes and urges citizens to strictly follow fire protection regulations.
