Greek Boeotia Wildfire Linked to Faulty Wind‑Turbine Line, Mayor Arrested
A large wildfire ignited in the Boeotia region of Greece and quickly spread to the western part of Attica, burning thousands of hectares of forest and causing extensive property damage. The Directorate for Investigation of Arson Crimes (Δ.Α.Ε.Ε.) determined that the fire was caused by sparks generated when oscillating cables in a private electricity‑transmission network, which carries power from wind turbines to the national grid, came into contact with the ground. Two suspects were arrested: an electrical engineer who signed the design and supervised the project, and a contractor who built the network. The mayor of Stylida, Ioannis Apostolou, was also taken into custody because his construction company was responsible for installing the aerial network. A criminal case for arson with possible intent as a felony has been filed against the two men, and the owner of the wind‑turbine company involved is being sought but has not been located. The investigation remains ongoing.
